Anurag Kashyap: I think we are selling nationalism

Director Anurag Kashyap is all set to Kickstart 2018 with his sports drama film Mukkabaaz. The film was screened at the prestigious Toronto International Film Festival and the very recent Mumbai Film Festival. Starring Vineet Kumar Singh, Zoya Hussain, Jimmy Shergill and Ravi Kishan, Mukkabaaz is scheduled to release on January 12 next year.

In an exclusive interaction with Cinespeaks, director Anurag Kashyap speaks to us.
On exploring an all together different genre in contrast to what he is best known for, Anurag said, “It has been an amazing experience for me. Shooting for Mukkabaaz was really challenging as we shot the film in 50 degrees. I got to explore a lot of things through the making of this film. It was an enjoyable time for me.”

On actor Vineet Kumar Singh who is playing the character of boxer in the film, Anurag said, “My only condition to Vineet was to train in Boxing and become a boxer. Otherwise, I wouldn’t have made the film.”

When we questioned Anurag on the subject of patriotism in films and how some social elements come in the way of a film and pose as an obstacle, Anurag said,”I think nationalism and patriotism cannot be selled. It is very annoying. For me, it is insulting to see National Anthem being marketed and put on display. Every person has the right to express their opinions under the Constitution. So, some social elements trying to disturb the film is inevitable. Eventually, the film comes out and that is what is important. Udta Punjab was embroiled in many controversies but it released successfully.”
