The trailer of Anupam Kher’s next, The Acccidental Prime Minister has created a storm throughout the country but mainly for all the wrong and uncalled for reasons. Although Anupam Kher’s acting and personification of former PM, Dr. Manmohan Singh is being praised thoroughly, the film has found itself in a bit of an expected controversy, but probably not this early.
With the Elections of 2019 ringing in soon, the Congress finds it hard to hold it’s feet post the trailer due to which their insecurity has led them target the film by demanding a pre screening of the film before it’s release. Although the film has been cleared by the CBFC, seems like the Congress is playing hard to be “elected” as the new ‘Censor Board’ of the film industry. What’s worse is they haven’t decided to care any bit when the book written by Sanjaya Baru has been present in the public eye for 5 years but suddenly pop up when a film is being made because obviously a film reaches a bigger audience than a book on any given day.
The Congress Party has threatened to vandalize the release of the film if the cuts requested by them are not made post the special screening of the film for the Congress.
Although nobody from the film industry has commented on the issue so far, National Award Winning Film Director came forward to speak on the issue with a leading media channel and said –
” It’s a Déjà vu moment for me, last year Indu Sarkar, my movie on emergency was agitated against, across the country, film is based on a book, nobody protested against the book while it was in public domain. ”
Madhur Bhandarkar unfortunately had been at the receiving end of similar reactions from the party when his film Indu Sarkar about the Emergency period of 1975 was to be released.. The Congress then felt it would show Indira Gandhi in bad light and hence created a ruckus to hamper the release of the film by using a violent approach.
One year down the line, he finds his actor of ‘Indu Sarkar’ in a similar situation and having been through the same situation earlier, the ace Director surely knows how it feels to be in the shoes of Anupam Kher now as Anupam Kher is a common factor in both ‘Indu Sarkar’ and ‘ The Accidental Prime Minister’ and henceforth as expected from him, had no half measures to support his actor when he needed him the most.
Kudos to Mr. Bhandarkar for being the first one from the Film Industry to actually open up on the issue.
