Interview : Arshad Warsi – ‘’ ’I think that every producer and director’s criteria is to make money so they go for safest route first.’’

Arshad Warsi today is one if the finest actors in bollywood today. As an actor he has always experimented with his characters and roles by performing them in different genres and he has been very critically praised and acclaimed for the same. He has been successful in creating a permanent niche for himself as one of most successful actors in this super competitive bollywood film industry. Currently he’s gearing up for the release of his film Golmaal 4 on 19th October 2017.

Why do you think that we’re taking this much time to explore horror comedies in India given the fact they’re so successful down in south?

I think that every producer and director’s criteria is to make money so they go for safest route and don’t take risks like these. Some people don’t like to venture out of their comfort zone to try anything new or when you have excess money which I vouch for so there’s reason why 8 out of 10 films are comedy or even if they’re serious there’s an element of comedy in it so horror is one space that really doesn’t have a huge audience at all due to which we have to make such films in a limited budget and try to recover the money for the same.

Have you all tried to explore the horror comedy genre with Golmaal 4 this time around?

Yes definitely we have tried to explore the horror comedy genre with Golmaal 4 this time around. When Rohit Shetty makes a film, there’s really no question of budget in it as it is huge. But a horror film for him would be a bad idea. But a horror comedy is a first in itself that we’ve attempted in Golmaal 4 and as I had said that most of the films in bollywood like 8 out of 10 films are comedy or even if they’re serious there’s an element of comedy in it.

What are your thoughts on horror genre in general?

If you really go to see we make a horror film where we want the songs, rumours, immunity, and romance in it and at the end a very weird aspect of horror to it too so it’s a very messed up and confused space of film making. But this in Golmaal 4 I can’t even call it horror since it’s a comedy but just with an element of ghost in it.

Was it difficult to come up with new characteristics for the characters in Golmaal 4?

Nothing as I think I am doing just what I did in last 3 Golmaal films as well so did all of us as we are in pretty much the same space as well and I think that’s the way to be. Because I believe that you make sequels purely as its characters have worked well and you can’t just make sequels of a good film at all. The characters which are very successful enough should not be messed up at all and just be left the way they are. Like if Munna and Circuit change that won’t be a very good idea.

Was it more of a responsibility on your part to come up with a good film as every time you all come up with sequels to Golmaal series?

It was a very huge and major responsibility on all the actors part to come up with a good film for this successful Golmaal franchise but more than actors point of view it is more of Rohit and writers as to choose a right subject and execute it in a proper manner is very important so we actors are always going to go by what’s written so we are totally fine with it.

Arshad we’ve seen Ajay being a serious and strict guy in film where Tusshar is dumb one so do you feel that you get the upper edge as always you’ve got best lines in all the Golmaal films?

No I mean it’s not like that at all. I believe that the dialogue writers of film are very nice. But I’ll tell you according to me who’s got best lines in the film which I said that when we did part 1 I told Tusshar that the audiences are going to love you for your role in film and he didn’t believe me at all but let’s just put it that way ‘’Tusshar is a new thing and most loved characters of all Golmaal series and people always love to watch anything new and interesting’’. I think other than that I really enjoy everybody as well like even Ajay has got a beautiful element of being scared in the film which is damn good contrast to his role in Golmaal 3 where he was not scared of anybody and used to beat everyone and anyone who would come in his way versus his new role in Golmaal 4 where he’s scared and petrified of ghosts in the film.

How was your experience of working with Parineeti and Tabu this time?

Parineeti is a doll who’s so sweet, down to earth and a beautiful person overall which I think is very important. She’s a wonderful, amazing actor and a sweetheart as well. It was a pleasure working with her and knowing her too. She’s very delicate, endearing and sweet with too much of energy and it’s like she has a couple of batteries early in morning like fully charged. Tabu I know her very well and all such types of people are very beautiful and I feel that’s the most important thing.

Tabu is known more for her serious roles so what do you think about her comic role this time?

Yes the first day when she walked in on the set I said what are you doing here. You know that’s the thing that all actors their desire is to do everything. About Tabu the fact is that if you are a good actor then you can do everything and she’s not a limited actor as she’s a good actor whose one of those that can pull off any role very smoothly. It’s like Mithun Chakraborty look at him in Mirzya and then Golmaal 3 now that’s a good actor where you see the range of a person. Tabu has very huge and vast range as an actor and she’s a person full of energy who’s a good actor.

There’s a lot of speculation happening for the Munna Bhai Series like even Sanjay and Raju said it’s happening so have you signed the film?

I just met Raju a few days back at Nargis Dutt Cancer Charity art exhibition event where all of us met each other and just decided that lets do it like Raju said that his Sanjay Dutt biopic film only 6 days more of shooting is left so after that shooting is over all of us involved in Munna Bhai franchise will only entirely concentrate on Munna Bhai series. The story of the film is ready.

How excited are you to be working with Sanjay once again in Munna Bhai series this time around?

Sanjay is a sweetheart and I love him and the fact that he praised me just made my day. I am very happy and excited to be working with Sanjay once again in Munna Bhai series this time around. He’s a very amazing person and I am personally very fond of him as he’s just like a gentle giant guy who’s got a heart of a kid who makes mistakes and he’s one of those kind of people and really I am looking forward to it and we speak on phone very off and on.
