Rohit Shetty is an Indian film director and producer. His work as a filmmaker include the films of the super successful Golmaal franchise i.e. Golmaal, Golmaal Returns, Golmaal 3, Singham, Bol Bachchan, Singham Returns, Chennai Express and Dilwale. Now he’s back with the 4th part to Golmaal series that’s Golmaal 4 that is a horror comedy releasing on 19th October 2017.
Why do you think that we’re taking this much time to explore horror comedies in India given the fact they’re so successful down in south?
I think that every producer and director’s criteria is to make money so they go for safest route and don’t take risks like these. Some people don’t like to venture out of their comfort zone to try anything new or when you have excess money which I vouch for so there’s reason why 8 out of 10 films are comedy or even if they’re serious there’s an element of comedy in it so horror is one space that really doesn’t have a huge audience at all due to which we have to make such films in a limited budget and try to recover the money for the same.
Have you tried to explore the horror comedy genre with Golmaal 4 this time around?
Yes definitely I have tried to explore the horror comedy genre with Golmaal 4 this time around. When Rohit Shetty makes a film, there’s really no question of budget in it as it is huge. But a horror film for him would be a bad idea. But a horror comedy is a first in itself that we’ve attempted in Golmaal 4 and as I had said that most of the films in bollywood like 8 out of 10 films are comedy or even if they’re serious there’s an element of comedy in it.
What are your thoughts on horror genre?
If you really go to see we make a horror film where we want the songs, rumours, immunity, and romance in it and at the end a very weird aspect of horror to it too so it’s a very messed up and confused space of film making. But this horror comedy in Golmaal 4 I can’t even call it horror since it’s a comedy but just with an element of ghost in it.
Are all the characters in the film same from previous Golmaal series as well?
Yes all the 5 boys and rest of the actors in the film have their same names, nature and characteristics as well which has been there that way since past few Golmaal films apart from new additions of Tabu and Parineeti in the film.
Was it difficult to come up with new characteristics for all the characters in Golmaal 4?
Nothing as I think I am doing just what I did in last 3 Golmaal films as well so did all of us as we are in pretty much the same space as well and I think that’s the way to be. Because I believe that you make sequels purely as its characters have worked well and you can’t just make sequels of a good film at all. The characters which are very successful enough should not be messed up at all and just be left the way they are.
Was it more of a responsibility on your part to come up with a good film for this successful Golmaal franchise?
It was a very huge and major responsibility on my part to come up with a good film for this successful Golmaal franchise but more than actors point of view it is more of Rohit and writers as to choose a right subject and execute it in a proper manner is very important so we are always going to go by what’s written so we are totally fine with it.
How was your experience of working with Parineeti this time?
Parineeti is a doll who’s so sweet, down to earth and a beautiful person overall which I think is very important. She’s a wonderful, amazing actor and a sweetheart as well. It was a pleasure working with her and knowing her too. She’s very delicate, endearing and sweet with too much of energy and it’s like she has a couple of batteries early in morning like fully charged.
Tabu is known more for her serious roles so what do you think about her comic role this time?
Yes the first day when she walked in on the set I said what are you doing here. You know that’s the thing that all actors their desire is to do everything. About Tabu the fact is that if you are a good actor then you can do everything and she’s not a limited actor as she’s a good actor whose one of those that can pull off any role very smoothly. It’s like Mithun Chakraborty look at him in Mirzya and then Golmaal 3 now that’s a good actor where you see the range of a person. Tabu has very huge and vast range as an actor and she’s a person full of energy who’s a good actor.
