Diljit Dosanjh hits a hatrick in Bollywood with ‘Welcome To New York‘ being first of it’s kind movie that is based on an award show and takes you behind the scenes of the life of a struggling performer making it big on stage amidst Bollywood celebrities. Diljit plays Teji who is accompanied by Jeenat Patel (played by Sonakshi Sinha) his stylist to the award function in New York.
Talking about his character and the concept of the film, Diljit said, “The film is based on a Live show, which technically is IIFA that happened last year. This is the first time any such thing has been done. I don’t know how it’ll be received by the audiences. It was a very unique experience. Bollywood is mocking itself with this film. Whoever went to IIFA has been captured in the film. I have never done a film like this. This is my first multi-starrer film, where I play a struggling artist”.
“We had a contract while shooting for the film that mentioned we can start shooting anytime during our time in New York for IIFA. Whenever an artist would get free we would commence shooting. We have shot at 2 am till 6 am. We would sleep for 3 hours max and then again at 11 am would be our call time. It was a crazy experience”, he added on a different shooting experience he had for ‘Welcome To New York’.
On his co-stars, he said, “Sonakshi Sinha is super cool to work with. Karan Johar keeps the director in him aside while acting. There are lot of stories going on in the film, I share two scenes with Boman Irani“.
Upon making it big in Bollywood, Diljit said, “Hardwork pays off, regions don’t matter. I was offered Phillauri before Udta Punjab has released. I wanted to work with a superstar like Anushka Sharma. If I feel I don’t fit well with other people in a film, then I restrict myself from doing it. Every artist today wants to do a biopic and this dream of mine is coming true with Sony Pictures’ Soorma being helmed by Shaad Ali. I will start shooting for Arjun Patiala alongside Kriti Sanon, where I play a police officer in a rom-com”.
“I’m thankful for the roles I’m being offered. Sometimes I feel I get something I don’t deserve. I’m not greedy to work with anyone. I have always been taught to work with those who want to work with you rather than them who you want to work with”, he added.
On the other side of his popularity through his comments on posts of female stars, he said, “I comment and tweet to a lot of people, but people want to pick what’s sensational. So what if Kylie Jenner has had a baby, I still like her. I’m thankful that Kylie and Gal Gadot have made me a national news, it’s fun doing this”.
