In an interview with Cinespeaks, Paresh Rawal speaks to us.
Q: How did you felt when you were offered the role of Sunil Dutt in the film?
Paresh: I felt extremely overjoyed and happy when Rajkumar Hirani came to me with the script of Sanju. I was supposed to work with him in Munnabhai MBBS but it didn’t work out unfortunately. It was a double bonanza for me when he came to me with Sanju. So, it was great.
Q: Were you hesitant or nervous to play Sunil Dutt in the film?
Paresh: There wasn’t any insecurity but there is always a slight feeling of being challenged. As an actor, it is always exciting to take up challenging characters. In contrast to Sanjay Dutt, Sunil Dutt was a totally honest and simple person. So, I had to take up all the features such as honesty and simplicity for the character. He dealt with family issues, death threats, Sanjay Dutt’s drug addiction and fought all his battles immensely. He is a true fighter.
Q: How was your bonding with Ranbir Kapoor off screen?
Paresh: I am a big fan of Ranbir Kapoor’s work since Rocket Singh. I loved his performances in Wake Up Sid, Tamasha and Rockstar. He has made brilliant choices in his career and has played amazing roles. He is a casual person and is not moody or recluse.
Q: How was the experience of working with Rajkumar Hirani?
Paresh: Rajkumar Hirani is a great person and I think that Sanjay Dutt is lucky that a director like Rajkumar Hirani has made a film on his life. He has handled the sensational and over the top life events of Sanjay Dutt with sensitivity and subtlety. As a filmmaker, he always give the audience a positive take away from his film. I love that about him.
Q: Actress Manishaa Koirala is essaying the character of Nargis Dutt in the film. What is your opinion on this?
Paresh: Manishaa Koirala has all the qualities of Nargis Dutt like dignity, fragility and beauty. She is a great actor. She can easily make pain feel dignified in a scene.
Q: Did you feel emotional while performing any particular scene in the film?
Paresh: There are a few scenes which made me feel emotional. But, I won’t be able to tell you as it would dilute the essence of the film.
