In an interview with Cinespeaks, Rajkumarr Rao speaks to us
Q: How was the experience of working with Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Anil Kapoor in Fanney Khan?
Rajkumarr: It was wonderful. Working with stalwarts like Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Anil Kapoor was a dream come true for me. Aishwarya is wonderful and has done a phenomenal job in the film. She gave me enough space to perform and we got along very well. She never let her larger than life image reflect while we working together. The whole journey of Fanney Khan has been amazing. Script wise, I loved my character and the film speaks on the subject of Body Shaming which is a taboo in our country. I could connect with the story and the script of the film.
Q: Have you seen the original film Everybody’s Famous?
Rajkumarr: The film is a remake of the Belgian movie Everybody’s Famous. I haven’t seen the original film. I feel it is better to have a fresh take than to get inclined towards the original story.
Q: How was the experience of working with debut director Atul Manjrekar?
Rajkumarr: It was great. He is very sensitive towards his characters and the story. The audience wouldn’t feel that Fanney Khan is his debut film. I enjoyed working with him.
Q: Do you discuss scripts with anyone in the industry or do you agree to film projects on your gut feeling?
Rajkumarr: I instinctively go with my gut feeling. I don’t feel doing a 2-minute role and get excited. I should like the character and script of the film. Whether its Bareilly Ki Barfi or now Fanney Khan where I am playing a supporting role, I always go with my gut feeling. The story has to excite me. I don’t bother about the number of scenes or the songs that I have in the film. My choices are purely based on the story and the script.
Q: What has been your take away from this film?
Rajkumarr: My experience of working with Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Anil Kapoor has been my biggest take away. They are just amazing and incredible actors. I got the opportunity to interact with a Filmmaker like Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra. I love his movie Rang De Basanti which is my all time favorite. So, working with the crew and the whole amazing experience has been my take away from Fanney Khan.
Q: What is your opinion on the Box-Office clash between Fanney Khan, Karwaan and Mulk?
Rajkumarr: Box-Office clashes are inevitable. It is extremely hard to find a solo release and there are so many different films being made in our country. But, I feel that Fanney Khan is based on a different subject and has a different story than the rest of the films. In fact, all the three films are totally different than each other.
Q: Any upcoming projects on the digital platform?
Rajkumarr: There are plans for Bose 2 but nothing is confirmed yet. I will have to give six months of time and shave my head again.
Q: Tell us something about your upcoming film Mental Hai Kya?
Rajkumarr: We have almost finished the shooting of the film. I am once again with Kangana Ranaut and it is always a pleasure to work with an actress like her. She is just amazing and I am looking forward to Mental Hai Kya with a lot of excitement.
Q: What next after Fanney Khan?
Rajkumarr: I will begin shooting for Made in China in September. It is a funny and a humorous film. Post that, I shall begin with Anurag Basu’s Imli.
