Much awaited film Newton had the trailer released yesterday on the Eros Now website. It is the story of a young man who is in charge of the elections in Dandkaranya, a Maoist infested part on India. Starring Rajkummar Rao, Pankaj Tripathi, Anjali Patil and Raghubir Yadav, and produced by Drishyam Films, this film is a celebration of democracy and how it is handled in high pressure situations.
Nutan Kumar, now Newton, is responsible for the elections in a small village area controlled by Maoists. As a very straightforward and focused young man, he undertakes the task with confidence despite knowing the risks. However, reaching there and actually putting in the place the democratic process teaches him how precious freedom of expression really is. As seen in the trailer, a soldier says ‘the last election saw 19 deaths but the casualties for this election will be known tomorrow’. The military representatives of the area, one played by the incredible Pankaj Tripathi, are doubtful of the usefulness of conducting elections, as he says, ‘Likh ke le lijiye, koi nahi aayega election ke liye.’ To which Newton cheekily replies, giving him a pen and paper, ‘Likh ke dijiye, collecter sahib ko submit karta hoon.’
Appreciated worldwide and winner of Cica Award at the Berlin Film Festival and Jury Prize at Hong Kong Film Festival, this tale investigates what one man can achieve if he is brave, focused and fearless.
Newton releases countrywide on 22nd September, 2017.
