Review – Ranchi Diaries: ‘’A weak film that did not touch our heart.’’

Anupam Kher’s film ”Ranchi Diaries” was not a very much awaited film but since it was his film with a different set of actors we thought it would turn out to be a good film but sadly it has not turned out to be a good film at all. But it looks like the actors did not make a smart move by doing this film too.

Cast – Himansh Kohli (Manish), Soundarya Sharma (Gudiyaa), Taaha Shah (Pinku), Anupam Kher (Thakur Bhaiya) and Jimmy Shergill (Lallan Singh).

Directed by – Sattwik Mohanty.

Written by – Sattwik Mohanty.

Produced by – Rashmin Majithia and Anupam Kher.

Music by – Jeet Gannguli, Nickk, Tony Kakkar and Bobby-Imran.

Genre – comedy crime thriller.

Story –

It is the story that is set in a small town of Ranchi in Jharkhand where Gudiya and her friends are from. Gudiya has a dream of becoming a pop star and singer just like the international pop singing sensation Shakira. But then her this talent draws uninvited attention of the local politician Thakur Bhaiya which finally ends up with her decision of planning to elope and flee away from Ranchi to town Jharkhand for fulfilling her dreams and ambitions with her childhood love Manish.

It’s a story about how then they decide to rob a bank to get their friend’s garage papers back from the police inspector where he demands 5 lakhs for the same. How they end up going to local rural bank for robbing the money from it and the entire chaos and drama that surrounds them throughout all these situations in film.

Plot –

The plot of the story was very weak and fragile which could very clearly be seen in the film as well.
Story of the film was not at all spellbinding, penetrating types that usually keeps the audiences glued to the screens. Even though we agree that there was no childish and very kiddish approach towards the most important characters in the film.

But the film tumbled down very miserably due to a very non interesting, not funny at all, no humour factor and most importantly a weak storyline that was penned and written by the director Sattwik Mohanty himself which is also one of the main reasons of this film as a real collateral damage and failing to create that magic on the screens that it wanted to but ended up badly.

Plot is the main factor in any story that decides how the entire film is going to be. But here it was clearly seen that not much of attention and importance was given to the plot of the film which ultimately resulted in terrible story of the film.

Story of the film was not at all gripping, intense types that usually keeps the audiences glued to the screens. There was also childish and sort of a very kiddish approach towards the most important characters in the film which is also one of the main reasons of this film as a real collateral damage and failing to create that magic on the screens that it wanted to do.

Script –

Script was very dry to be very honest as audiences could feel that while watching it in theatres. There was no wow, oomph and bang on factor in the script which could very clearly be felt in the film as well. Also the dialogues of main characters in film were also not up to the mark at all.

Performance –

This was Soundarya Sharma’s debut film in Bollywood which can be termed as a stepping stone into mainstream bollywood cinema for her and she has performed very well for a first time debutant newcomer in this industry but we think that this was not a perfect moment for her to enter Bollywood films.

Soundarya Sharma’s performance as Gudiya the very young, spunky, full of life girl next door looks very convincing and natural in the first half however as soon as she’s shown as the girl who plans to rob the bank with her friends in the second half her performance does not look convincing and she could not justify herself in that type of get up and look.

But despite all this the role of Gudiya was really meant for Soundarya Sharma as she debuted in film industry with this film but somehow it ended up badly since she just couldn’t prove herself completely with this film.

Himansh Kohli as Manish has done an OK role but it didn’t look convincing on his part at all. He was not meant for it as he completely failed in creating the aura that usually any typical desi character from small towns like Ranchi or any other places creates in their films which his role as Manish needed but he could not fulfill that expectation.

Taaha Shah (Pinku), Anupam Kher (Thakur Bhaiya) and Jimmy Shergill (Lallan Singh) have done their roles very nicely as they were just in perfect sync with their characters in the film and their dialogue delivery, expressions, acting and their emotions was just bang on and to the T.

Anupam Kher (Thakur Bhaiya) and Jimmy Shergill (Lallan Singh) have performed very good and given their entire dedication to get in the skin of their characters in the film so that it looks as real, genuine, and effortless as it can from their side and it felt like these roles were just meant for them. Their expressions, dialogues, acting, and emotions were in perfect synchronization with their characters as far film is concerned.

Himansh Kohli (Manish), Soundarya Sharma (Gudiyaa), Taaha Shah (Pinku), Anupam Kher (Thakur Bhaiya) and Jimmy Shergill (Lallan Singh) have performed their characters in film with complete sincerity and honesty but we guess that this film was not a smart move for them at all. It was like sometimes by fluke or chance things work out for such films and the actors and sometimes they just don’t work out at all.

Dialogues –

There were no power packed one liners and punch lines as dialogues in this film as usually such comedy crime thriller films do have those things already embedded in them but it was not the case over here with this film.

Direction –

Sattwik Mohanty has done good direction from his side in the film but it was OK and not up to the mark as it could have been stronger and amazing but unfortunately it was not which was clearly the case with the film.

Only in some of the parts of the film the direction was strong and good but in major parts of film there was a very weak direction that could not just hold up the entire film together which could be very clearly seen in the film.

Screenplay –

Some sections in the film were not looking convincing and were very unreal as they have shown it quiet casually which was not at all good. They should have done more solid work on screenplay of the film but they have not and that is clearly seen in the film.

Screenplay is a very important part of any film as a strong screenplay helps in bringing out all the main characters more beautifully than what is expected but here in this film screenplay seen just fell short of what was expected in the film and due to that the characters in film could not perform to their best of capabilities.

Music –

Music was one factor that was good and nice in the film. Music has been given by Jeet Gannguli, Nickk, Tony Kakkar and Bobby-Imran in film. We always expect the best music from them as they’re such brilliant composers and even this time their music did have that magic and was charming as well.

Cinespeaks Verdict –

This film is meant for particular set of classes. It is only a one time watch film but not the type of film that you’d like to go to. If you have nothing to do you can definitely go and watch this film but it is really not worth a watch as you won’t be missing out on anything extra ordinary by ditching this film and you can may be use that money to buy yourself some pizza, a bottle of coke and watch Golmaal series at your home in your laptop cosily in your comfort zone without a doubt.
