Sandeep Singh and Diljit Dosanjh Interview with Cinespeaks for Soorma

Soorma is a 2018 Indian Hindi biographical sports drama film based on the life of hockey player Sandeep Singh, directed by Shaad Ali and produced by Sony Pictures Networks India and C.S. Films. The film stars Diljit Dosanjh and Taapsee Pannu in lead roles and is scheduled to have its theatrical release on 13 July 2018.

In an Interview with Cinespeaks, actor Diljit Dosanjh and Sandeep Singh speaks to us.

Q: What convinced you to take up this film?
Diljit: The story of Sandeep Singh is an incredible one. It is one of the best stories and I was really amazed with the script of the film. The film has a very strong storyline which made me even more excited. Although I was a bit hesitant and reluctant because of the hockey factor, I eventually took it up. I don’t have a strong background in the field of sports because I was always inclined towards music right from my childhood. But, I took it as a challenge and agreed for the film.

Q: Are you selective in doing Hindi films because post Udta Punjab and Phillauri there has been a long gap?
Diljit: I was offered a few films post Udta Punjab but I did not found them exciting enough. I had a film offer which required me to take off my turban and I couldn’t do that film. I have an identity with my turban not only in India but also at an international level too. I wouldn’t do that. On the other hand, my Punjabi films are produced by a lot of friends. So, I maintain a good balance between the two.

Q: Any plans of venturing into direction and production?
Diljit: I am not sure of Direction. But, I would like to produce films and tell a story like Soorma. In both Punjabi and Hindi, I would like to venture into production in the near future.

Q: What was your reaction when you came to know that Diljit Dosanjh will essay your character in the film?
Sandeep: When we started with the initial process of the film, we did not have any specific actor in our minds. We wanted someone who could get the physicality right because it’s a biopic. It was great to get Diljit on board because I have been listening to his music since 2006 when his album ‘Smiled’ had released. I have been watching his Punjabi movies too since so many years. Also, Diljit could convincingly express the pain and suffering which I went through his acting skills

Q: Did you had any offers for your biopic before Soorma?
Sandeep: I was approached in 2011 for my biopic to be made in Punjabi. I wanted to mount it on a larger scale because it would reach every household. If it had been made in Punjabi, the film would have had limited audience and viewership. So, I wanted to make it in Hindi and therefore rejected the offers. I love Punjabi movies and I am not at all against them. I want this story to reach the youngsters which will keep them a positive message.

Q: Will the audience get to see you in the film?
Sandeep: I won’t tell you which scene it will be because it will dilute the essence of the film. Yes, I will appear in the film for one scene.

Q: Tell us something about your hockey goals?
Sandeep: I have achieved more than 170 + goals. My highest tournament goals was in the Olympic Qualifiers which was 16 and 5 goals out of it made it to the finals when I set my world record.

Q: Who are your favorite actors and what kind of movies do you like to watch?
Sandeep: I love watching Punjabi movies and I have never missed any movie of Diljit. I also like Akshay Kumar because his movies have a very significant message with a good quotient of entertainment.
