Actor Vicky Kaushal who has impressed the critics and the audience with his previous film Raazi is all set for his upcoming film Sanju. Sanju is a biopic on actor Sanjay Dutt and Ranbir Kapoor plays the lead character in the film. The film also features actors Dia Mirza, Paresh Rawal, Sonam Kapoor and Anushka Sharma in pivotal roles. Directed by Rajkumar Hirani, Sanju is scheduled to release on June 29.
Q: How did Rajkumar Hirani approached you for a role in Sanju?
Vicky: I was approached by Rajkumar Hirani an year before we commenced for the shoot of the film. He just had a casual conversation with me and wanted to know the kind of films I was doing. He watched my film Masaan (2015) and wanted to write the character in the film keeping me in mind. I was amazed with his meeting and we then met an year later again for Sanju.
Q: Tell us something about your character Paresh in the film?
Vicky: Paresh is dear and close friend of Sanju in the film. The character is a combination of fact and fiction. He is a close companion of Sanju and is very close to his family. It is a Gujarati character and I didn’t have to follow particular mannerisms or body language. It was a wonderful experience to try something new. Abhijaat Joshi who is the co-writer of the film meticulously carved out the character with a good balance of Gujarati dialogues. He made sure that it wouldn’t become caricaturish. I also went to Surat in Gujarat to understand the culture of Gujarati people.
Q: How was it to play a character which is very colourful and lively after a series of serious roles in your previous films?
Vicky: It was great. It is a colourful character and I used to love the look tests. I loved wearing the costumes for the character. There was no requirement of being subtle. It was all colourful and lively.
Q: How was the experience of working with Rajkumar Hirani?
Vicky: Rajkumar Hirani is a gem of a person. I learnt a lot from him while working on Sanju. He is extremely humble and modest. He never showcases that he is a filmmaker who has made great films like PK and 3 Idiots.
Q: You had earlier stated that Raazi would give you a universal appeal. Do you think Sanju will sky rocket that?
Vicky: I hope and pray that it happens with every film of mine. As an actor, my job is to only act. When a film releases, it is beyond my control. The success of the film is then dependent on the verdict of the audience. The film then has its own destiny. But, I do hope and pray that every film of mine should receive appreciation and love from the audience.
Q: Are you in talks with Dharma Productions for another film?
Vicky: Yes, there are talks with Dharma Productions post Raazi. I am in talks with them and nothing has been finalized as of now.
Q: Tell us something about your next film Manmarziyan?
Vicky: I am playing a Punjabi character in the film and it is one of the craziest characters that I have played in my filmography. I had an opportunity to work with actors like Abhishek Bachchan and Taapsee Pannu in the film. I am really looking forward to that film.
Q: What comments have you received post the massive success of Raazi?
Vicky: I loved the unanimous appreciation and love and it was surprisingly beautiful. It feels good when people appreciate your work. I received some lovely messages and comments for the film.
