REVIEW: NEVER KISS YOUR BEST FRIEND: Will this heart-warming friendship stand the test of time?

Cast: Nakuul Mehta, Anya Singh

Director: Arif Khan

The brand new web series ‘Never Kiss Your Best Friend’ is based on a book of the same name by Sumrit Shahi. The show features Anya Singh as Tanie and Nakuul Mehta as Sumer. It is created by Arif Khan and is produced by Sarita A Tanwar and Niraj Kothari. This show can be streamed on Zee5.

The storyline revolves around an interesting journey of two people who became best friends whose friendship started on a very awkward yet laughable manner. However, they hit it off gradually. We see them coming across each other fiddly after 5 long years of separation.

Both of these characters discovered their common interests and coincidentally had enrolled into same University at London. Their friendship only blossomed and they time and again proved that a boy and a girl can just remain friends. But will it eventually change and give up into a stereotype? Only time will tell.

The series showcases Indian families based in abroad. It covers plethora of issues like forcing children to choose a science stream rather than following their dream career, homosexuality, time curfews for female child irrespective of their age, pressure of marrying someone that the family chooses and so on. These issues might bring in the audiences’ attention because of the relatability factor. But these might also come across as stereotypes pilled upon Indians.

The performances by the actors are refreshing and we connect to the characters. Mehta who has been a renowned face on television has first time tried his hands on OTT platforms and it is quite well done. The director tries to incorporate a lot of issues to break the household stereotypes but sometimes drags it too much.

CineSpeaks Verdict: This series is full of drama and romance. It has some twists and turns but becomes quite predictable at the end. One can definitely enjoy watching this series.

CineSpeaks gives 3.5 stars.
